My short trip to Kaspiysk was about abundant food and book shopping. When I arrived, at first I thought I’d find nothing in that seemingly typical seaside town. Then, as I was walking down the promenade, I caught sight of a seemingly typical waterfront cafe/restaurant called Breeze and somehow, contrary to my initial plans, decided to have lunch there.
Featuring local staple dishes, it turned out to be one of the most delicious meals of my whole journey. I went for kurze (dumplings) with meat and chudu (flat pie) with pumpkin. Accompanied by home-made sourcream and a glass of red house wine, both dishes were simply irresistible. I thought I’d have half of each as the portions were generous, but I ate it all, no problem.
PS The pumpkin chudu-meat kurze pairing felt so good that I decided to try to repeat the experience in Moscow and stop by Daglavka at Danilovsky Market during the last summer weekend. The only missing ingredient was the Caspian sea breeze.
